A car that smells like a damp towel when the air conditioning comes on has biological growth on the evaporator fins. The evaporator sits behind the dash, is permanently cold and wet, and its drain blocks with leaf litter — mould does the rest. In a sealed cabin that is a genuine air quality issue, not just an unpleasant one.
We replace the cabin or pollen filter, clear the condensate drain, and apply a sanitising treatment directly onto the evaporator core through the drain or intake rather than spraying deodoriser into the vents, which masks it for a fortnight and no longer.
On most vehicles it is a quick job and worth doing at the same time as a service.
