Plenty of air conditioning complaints have nothing to do with refrigerant. A system blowing cold on one side and warm on the other usually has a failed blend door actuator. A fan that only works on its highest setting is a blower resistor. A compressor that never engages may be perfectly healthy and simply locked out by a pressure switch doing its job.
A full diagnosis means both halves: the mechanical side — high and low pressures against ambient, vent temperature, superheat behaviour, condenser airflow — and the electrical side, scanning the climate control module for fault codes and testing actuators, switches and thermistors against manufacturer values.
Diagnosing properly first is what stops you paying for refrigerant you never needed.
